The Washi Mulberry Paper Table Lamp.

A modern interpretation of the traditional Japanese paper lantern ― handmade mulberry-paper shade stretched across an iron wire frame, casting a soft, evenly diffused glow. Akari-style, inspired by the lanterns used by cormorant fishermen in Gifu, Japan. Available in two sizes for bedside, console, or living-room use.

Design heritage

From the lanterns of Gifu, Japan.

The story

Akari-style, inspired by Gifu lanterns.

This piece is an Akari-style reinterpretation, drawing on a visit to the Japanese fishing village of Gifu, where for over 1,300 years fishermen have hunted the Nagara River using trained cormorants and paper lanterns ― the lamps drawing fish to the boats while the birds dive for the catch. The original lanterns were bamboo frames covered in fine paper.

Our designer carries that craft tradition forward with a contemporary form: the iron wire frame replaces bamboo, while the shade is built from handmade mulberry paper (washi), chosen because its long, soft fibres soften the light and spread it evenly through the room. Same iconic silhouette, same quality details ― at an accessible price.

Before you order

Important notes.

Each shade is unique

Mulberry paper is a handmade natural material. Subtle variations in fibre pattern, paper grain, and warm tone are characteristic of authentic washi ― these are features, not defects.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

What does “Akari-style” or “Washi” mean?

Akari (???) is the Japanese word for “light” or “illumination” ― and it’s also the name famously associated with mid-century paper-and-wire lanterns made in the Gifu tradition. We describe this lamp as “Akari-style” because it draws on that same craft heritage and silhouette language; it is an independently designed and manufactured piece.

Washi (??) is the traditional Japanese handmade paper used in the shade ― produced from the long fibres of the mulberry tree, which gives it its strength, soft texture, and characteristic warm glow when lit from behind.

What sizes does the Washi Paper Table Lamp come in?

Two sizes:

Compact: ? 10.2▼ ≠ H 16.9▼ (Dia 26 ≠ H 43 cm) ― well-proportioned for bedside tables, console tables, or a writing desk.
Large: ? 15.7▼ ≠ H 22.8▼ (Dia 40 ≠ H 58 cm) ― substantial scale for end tables in living rooms, foyers, or as a low floor lamp.

What is mulberry paper, and is it durable?

Mulberry paper (washi) is made from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. The fibres are long, flexible, and naturally strong ― far more durable than most Western papers. The paper is stretched over an iron wire frame and treated to retain its shape over time.

Slight variations in fibre pattern, paper grain, and warm tone between units are part of the handmade nature of authentic washi. These are not defects, but signatures of artisanal paper. Keep the lamp away from direct moisture and humid environments.

What kind of bulb does it use, and is it dimmable?

Standard E26 / E27 screw-base bulb (LED or Edison). Use E26 in North America, E27 in Europe and the UK. Bulbs are not included.

For the best aesthetic effect, we recommend warm-white LED bulbs (2700K) ― they pair beautifully with the natural amber tone of the mulberry paper.

The cord switch is a push-button on/off ― not a dimmer. To dim, pair with a dimmable LED bulb and a separate plug-in dimmer adapter.

How is the lamp powered?

The Washi Table Lamp is a plug-in tabletop fixture. It ships with a 150 cm / 59▼ cord with a push-button switch and a wall plug. No hardwiring needed ― set it on your table or floor, plug into your nearest outlet, and click the inline switch. The cord is extendable on request.

What is the return and exchange policy?

Dekorfine offers a 30-day return policy on undamaged items in their original packaging. Because the shade is handmade mulberry paper, slight variations in fibre pattern and warm tone between units are part of authentic washi craftsmanship ― these are not eligible for return as defects.

For returns, exchanges, or any questions, contact [email protected] ― we reply within 24 hours.
